Why Otaci

Where the trade routes of Ukraine and Europe cross

The Dniester has always been a border that connects. For centuries, the trade routes between East and West have crossed here, and Otaci and Mohyliv-Podilskyi grew up facing each other because of that link. Today the same crossing connects the European Union, through Moldova, with the heart of Ukraine, and every day it brings:

  • customers
  • traders
  • passenger vehicles
  • transport operators
  • entrepreneurs
  • goods

Demand from three sources

  • 1Europe and Moldova
  • 2transit traffic
  • 3the Ukrainian market

Of all the border crossings in the region, Otaci is the most important: the largest road crossing in northern Moldova and the largest between Moldova and Ukraine's Vinnytsia region.

The Otaci node

Three bridges over the Dniester, a few kilometres apart

Otaci, Vălcineț and Unguri (Ocnița district), together with Mohyliv-Podilskyi on the Ukrainian bank, form a border node of about 36,000 people. Road and rail cross in the same place: if one route gets congested, goods have an alternative a few kilometres away.

Traffic: before the war, today and after peace

  • Before the war (2017)≈1,500
vehicles a day, plus over 6,000 people
  • Today (2026, in wartime)≈390
    vehicles a day: 289 cars, 75 trucks, 26 buses
  • Capacity after the upgrade2,500
vehicles a day, on 6 lanes

The war has cut traffic almost fourfold, yet the infrastructure is being prepared for more than there was before. The World Bank puts Ukraine's recovery needs at $588 billion over 10 years, with transport the largest item (over $96 billion). Whoever sets up at the border now will already be in place when the traffic comes back.

Today, in detail

  • 289cars per dayaverage
  • 502cars in a single dayrecord
  • 75trucks per dayaverage
  • 26buses per dayaverage

At the current pace, that is roughly 105,000 cars, 27,000 trucks and 9,500 buses a year (estimate).
